Why Abstract-Technology Is the right learning technology partner for your organisation

Looking for a learning technology partner? Comparing the Open edX® platform, Canvas and 360Learning, and wondering who can actually deliver, not just install? This article explains what makes Abstract-Technology a trusted choice for organisations that take learning infrastructure seriously, and, honestly, what to watch out for when you compare providers.

Why the partner matters more than the platform

Open edX®, Canvas by Instructure, and 360Learning are three leading Learning Management Systems (LMS) and e-learning platforms, each offering distinct capabilities for delivering and managing digital learning experiences. Universities, enterprises, governments and NGOs use them to train anyone from a small private cohort to tens of thousands of learners. But none of them delivers value on its own. A learning platform has to be chosen, configured, branded, integrated, hosted, maintained and evolved - and it has to fit into your website, course catalogue, identity provider, HR or student information system (SIS), and the tools your teams already use.

That's where a partner comes in. And here's the awkward truth about this market: plenty of people will happily set up a platform for you, hand you a login and disappear. Six months later you're on a version that can't be upgraded, with integrations that half-work and support tickets that get "escalated" into a queue you never see the end of.

So the real question isn't "which provider has the slickest sales deck". It's who will still be there, competently, in year four: when something breaks at two in the morning, when a new release changes something you built, when your compliance team needs a security review, or when you want to add an AI tool that didn't exist when you started.

The problem nobody in this market wants to name

Open source software and platform reselling create a peculiar problem for buyers. Anyone can download the Open edX® platform. Anyone can resell a licence or put "LMS partner" on their homepage. The quality gap between providers is enormous, and it almost never shows up on a proposal.

You find it later. The platform quietly falls behind on upgrades. A routine integration turns into a three-month project because the setup was customised in ways nobody documented. Or the one person who "knew the platform" leaves and there's no one to pick up the thread.

What our partner statuses actually mean

This is why formal partner programmes exist: they give buyers a way to separate serious providers from opportunistic ones. Abstract-Technology holds a recognised status with each of the three LMS vendors we work with:

  • Verified Open edX® Service Provider. The non-profit stewarding the Open edX® project independently assesses technical proficiency, community contribution and delivery track record. Providers apply, submit references and go through a review, and they can lose the status if standards slip. We went through that process years ago and have held verified status ever since.
  • Value-Added Reseller for Canvas by Instructure in the DACH region and Italy. We don't just pass on licences: we implement, integrate, brand and support Canvas, Canvas Plus and Canvas Career for institutions in these markets.
  • Co-selling partner of 360Learning. We work alongside the 360Learning team to set up, connect and roll out collaborative learning for companies.

What these statuses don't tell you: how large a provider's team is, how well they'll handle your specific case, or whether they'll be pleasant to work with. You still need to find that out during discovery. But they do filter out the "someone read the docs last week" tier of provider, and that turns out to be a very useful filter when you compare.

Abstract-Technology is a European learning technology consultancy based in Berlin and Milano. We've been building on the Open edX® platform since 2015, long enough to remember when deployment took a full sprint and release names were numbered rather than botanical. We co-lead several of the Open edX® community's working groups, including Marketing, Translation, Virtual Events, LLM Optimization, Partnership development and BizDev. Our team works in English, German, Italian and Spanish, which matters enormously when you support a multilingual learner base or operate across the EU.

Today we design and run complete learning ecosystems: three LMS platforms, an AI toolkit, a content management system and a sovereign office suite, all from one accountable team. We'd still rather send you to the right tool than sell you the wrong one. The difference is that we now have more than one right answer to offer.

What our service requesters say

Abstract Technology brought real structure to the process - they took the time to understand what we actually needed and turned it into clear, well-thought-out requirements. They were honest and straightforward to work with throughout, and when we suggested something that maybe wasn't quite right, they weren't afraid to push back a little and help us land on a better answer. What stood out most was how reliable they were: nothing got lost, anything unclear got clarified, and everything we discussed was actually followed up on - and on time.

Three LMS, one ecosystem: which platform fits when

Where it shinesTypical use case
Solution
Open edX® platformOpen source, full data ownership, no per-seat lock-in, unlimited extensibility. Built for MOOCs, SPOCs, professional certification and multilingual programmes at national scale.Universities, public bodies, NGOs, large academies
Canvas by InstructureThe reference LMS in higher education, known for its intuitive UX, accessibility and depth of analytics. Canvas, Canvas Plus and Canvas Career cover degree programmes, K-12 and workforce learning.Universities, schools, institutions with established campus workflows
360 LearningCollaborative learning for the modern workforce: peer-driven authoring and AI-assisted content turn subject-matter experts into course creators.Companies running onboarding, sales enablement, compliance and internal academies

Not every organisation needs the same platform, and we'd rather match the tool to the job than the job to the tool. The above table shows how the three platforms typically divide the work.

The choice is rarely obvious from a feature list. It depends on who owns the data, how fast content has to be produced, which systems the platform must talk to, and how the budget is structured. That's exactly what we work out with you before anyone signs anything.

Beyond the LMS: content and collaboration

A learning ecosystem needs more than courses. Two further products complete the picture:

Payload CMS is the open-source headless content layer behind your website, portals and course catalogue. One source feeds every channel, with field-level localisation for multilingual content, fine-grained access control and an admin panel your editors will actually enjoy using.

OpenDesk is an open-source office and collaboration suite designed specifically to meet the needs of public sector. The project is funded and delivered by the Centre for Digital Sovereignty (ZenDiS) behalf of the Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI).

Together with the LMS and our AI toolkit, they form one ecosystem that's hosted in Europe and maintained by the same team.

Trusted across Europe

Built for your infrastructure

Production ready solutions from day 1

One of the honest lessons of a decade in this space: institutions don't want a science project.

Branding & frontend (MFE)

Fully customisable, React-based micro-frontends. Your identity, not ours.

Cookie consent & GDPR

Consent management built in, not a banner glued on top.

Certificates & open badges

Credentials that share cleanly to Credly, Accredible and other digital wallets.

Automated enrolment

Rule-based enrolment at scale, for cohorts you don't want to manage in a spreadsheet.

European Digital Credentials (EDC)

Native support for European Digital Credential (EDC) frameworks, the kind of thing you need in year two and dread building from scratch.

Course management

Simple tools to manage, archive and delete courses. Sounds small; matters a lot once your catalogue passes 300 courses.

Multi-tenancy

One platform, many organisations, each with its own catalogue, branding and user space.

CRM & SIS connectors

Salesforce and FullFabric for CRM and student information system alignment.

AI Assistant and AI Studio

Our AI toolkit for learners, authors, admins and course creators (more below).

LTI integration

One configuration pattern for video platforms, catalogues, proctoring, plagiarism detection and BigBlueButton.

Payment gateway (e-commerce)

Course sales via Stripe or Flywire, fully integrated.

Single sign-on

SAML, OAuth and OIDC, the boring standards that actually work in enterprise IT.

SCORM integration

Run legacy SCORM packages alongside native content, because migration is never a clean slate.

Learning paths

Structured sequences across courses for career tracks, certifications and multi-stage programmes.

The same principle applies to Canvas, 360Learning, Payload CMS and OpenDesk: we connect them through standards and documented APIs (LTI 1.3, SSO, SCORM, xAPI, webhooks) rather than one-off code. We used to spend the first weeks of every project rebuilding the same components. At some point it became obvious that this was wasted client budget. So we productised the common ground, and now spend discovery on the parts that are actually unique to each organisation.

Marketing pages love the phrase "end-to-end solution", which often means "we'll figure out what to sell you later". Here's the plain version of what Abstract-Technology delivers, across every product in our portfolio.

What we actually deliver

Moving from a legacy LMS

Moving from Moodle, Blackboard or another LMS with full data transfer, including automated conversion of Moodle courses to the Open edX® platform.

Host

EU infrastructure

European cloud, on-premise or your own infrastructure. GDPR-defensible by default, with no third-country data flows.

Run

Maintenance & Upgrade

Planned release upgrades, security patches and performance tuning: the quiet work that keeps a platform healthy in year five.

Connect

Integrations, content & workplace

SIS, HR and CRM systems, proctoring, live classrooms, badges, analytics and payments. Payload CMS for your website and catalogue, OpenDesk for your teams.

Author

Course production with AI

Instructional design, AI Studio for fast course drafts, XBlock development for unusual content types and hands-on help for subject-matter experts.

Enable

Training & knowledge transfer

For authors, administrators and technical staff, in English, German, Italian and Spanish. The goal is a team that's self-sufficient on the parts it wants to own.

What ten years does to a team

The Open edX® platform we started with in 2015 looked nothing like today's. The interfaces were clunkier, the deployment layer barely existed, and the release cadence was, let's say, relaxed. Since then we've upgraded through every major release, contributed to core features, watched capabilities arrive and be deprecated, and written the migration paths our future selves needed.

The result is a kind of institutional memory that's hard to fake and impossible to buy. When a client asks whether a new feature is worth adopting, we usually have a first-hand answer, because we deployed it for someone else eighteen months ago and watched what happened. That experience now carries over to every platform we touch: we know what breaks during migrations, which integrations survive upgrades and where hidden costs tend to appear.

Advice you can trust, because we don't sell just one platform

This matters, so it's worth saying explicitly. With three LMS platforms in our portfolio, we have no reason to force every project onto the same one. Sometimes the Open edX® platform is the clear answer: a long horizon, integrations that matter, data that has to stay under the client's control. Sometimes Canvas fits better, because a university already runs its campus workflows around it. Sometimes 360Learning is the fastest way to get a company's experts producing courses. And sometimes the honest answer is that your current platform is fine, and what you really need is better integration, a better website or better course production.

We don't hold this position out of neutrality for its own sake. It's that advice is only worth having when it isn't tied to one product. If the only tool you sell is a hammer, every problem starts to look like a nail. We'd rather run fewer, well-fitted projects than collect clients who quietly regret their platform choice in year two.

Ai Strategy

How we approach AI in learning

AI is now part of every learning technology conversation, and it has raised the stakes on the partner question rather than lowered them. Anyone can drop a chatbot onto a website. Very few can integrate AI into a learning platform in a way that respects learner privacy, produces defensible outputs and doesn't quietly break the teaching underneath.

Abstract-Technology started integrating AI into learning platforms in 2024, and by 2026 it's a substantial part of what we do. Our approach is deliberately unfashionable: we don't bolt AI onto every possible surface. We identify the places where it genuinely helps and integrate carefully there. Our AI toolkit has two parts:

  • AI Assistant for learners, authors and admins: a 24/7 learning companion and chatbot that hands over to your team when needed, help while writing and editing content, and support with platform administration, predictive analytics and validation.
  • AI Studio for course creators: it turns your existing material into a structured course draft with assessments, which your experts then refine and publish.

For European organisations there's a second dimension that matters just as much as the AI itself: data sovereignty. Where does the model run? Whose infrastructure processes learner data? Can the flow be audited? With the EU AI Act’s main obligations in force since August 2026 - and higher-risk education-sector systems facing stricter transparency and record-keeping duties - these questions are no longer optional for public institutions. We build AI integrations that answer those questions the way European compliance teams need them answered: on EU infrastructure, with clear data boundaries and auditability built in. That combination of modern AI and legal defensibility is hard to achieve with hosted-only products, and it's one reason more public institutions are choosing open, European-hosted learning ecosystems right now.

Partnership with Abstract-Technology

The kinds of partnerships we take on

Rather than name clients, here are the patterns that make up most of our work. If you recognise your situation in one of them, we're probably worth at least a conversation.

  • Digital universities and academic programmes: full online campuses for institutions running degree programmes, on the Open edX® platform or Canvas. Student information system integration, grading workflows, certification and multilingual delivery.
  • Global training at scale: multilingual, mobile-optimised learning for healthcare workers, humanitarian staff and educators, often in low-bandwidth settings across many countries.
  • Government and public sector: training programmes with strict data sovereignty, accessibility and audit requirements. On-premise or EU-cloud deployments, often combined with OpenDesk as a sovereign workplace.
  • Corporate learning and internal academies: onboarding, compliance and sales enablement on 360Learning or the Open edX® platform, connected to HR systems and without per-seat lock-in where it matters.
  • Learning as a product: organisations whose training platform is part of what they offer to customers, partners or the market, with Payload CMS for the website and catalogue and integrated e-commerce for selling courses, certificates and subscriptions.

How a partnership with Abstract-Technology starts

Every engagement is a little different, but the shape is usually the same. It starts with a discovery conversation: normally a 45-minute call, sometimes a workshop if the project is complex. The point of that call isn't to sell you anything. It's to understand what you're trying to achieve, which platform and products actually fit, and what the smallest sensible starting point would be.

If it makes sense to keep talking, we scope. That means a real document with milestones, decision points and pricing that's honest about what's fixed and what's estimated. Not everything in this kind of work can be quoted precisely upfront, integrations especially tend to reveal complexity as you go, and we'd rather say so plainly than present a change request later.

If you're at the "considering our options" stage

The best thing you can do at the start of a platform decision is to talk to two or three providers before you have a fixed spec. What you're really evaluating is how they think, not the demo they've prepared. Ask each of them when their recommended platform would be the wrong choice. The ones who can answer honestly are usually the ones worth working with.

If Abstract-Technology is on your shortlist, we'd rather have a real conversation than send you a deck. Book a call and we'll spend an hour on your specifics. If a platform isn't the right answer, we'll tell you. If we're not the right partner for the project, we'll say that too. We'd rather be honest and remembered than close a deal we shouldn't have.
